El Vergel, or Black Mountain, rests on an inactive volcano in the Tolima region of Colombia, that has created incredibly nutrient rich soil for planting. El Vergel is owned and operated by Martha Bayter, and her two sons Elias and Shady. We were really drawn to their passion for innovation and growing exceptional coffee, and currently El Vergel has more than 22 varieties of coffee, a testament to their hard work and passion for coffee. We have been building this relationship for several years, and we are thrilled to make a substantial volume commitment to the Bayter's in 2023.
This washed lot is 100% Caturra variety. It was hand picked with a focus on ripe cherry selection, and harvested in November of 2022. The coffee was washed and fermented for 24-hours, and then dried mechanically for one week. The result is a beautifully consistent, sweet and balanced coffee that represents all the hard work on El Vergel.
The coffee develops to a cinnamon color. The light roast profile allows us to showcase the milk chocolate sweetness and pleasing apple-like acidity inherent in this delicious coffee.

I keep going back to this one because it is so flavorful and smooth!!
Delivery fast. Ordering bad. First order discount was applied, but free shipping at a certain order amount was not. Without the admitted error by Speedwell, I would have changed the order amount and basically gotten an additional bag of beans for free.
We tried to help this customer with a free shipping code, but instead he used another code for less savings. You can only use one discount code at a time. Sorry, but we tried to help!
Simply the best cup of coffee I've ever had. I'm not good at describing flavors, but I can tell you this one has several layers of complexity. It is full flavored, a bit earthy, nutty, and smooth.
I initially received the wrong product, but the issue was quickly resolved, even though it was the weekend. I'm very impressed with the service, and I highly recommend this company.
I usually seek Bourbon and Caturra from various independent roasters. Coffee Review is often a starting point in my search. The review given by them to these grains is absolutely well deserved. Martha Bayter & sons, owners of El Vergel (The Orchard or Garden), perform flawlessly nurturing the undisputed Queens of their Vergel in Tolima, “sus arbustos Caturra”, with such love and care!
Speedwell’s roasters must be aware of the privilege of handling this excellent coffee and I say they honored this one. The Queens have bestowed on us a remarkable cup of coffee!
